My first encounter with the Egoscue Method was while I was at a birthday party for one of my son’s friends. I was talking to a fellow parent about the work that I do (Rolf method of Structural Integration) and she said “Oh, that sounds like the Egoscue method”. I had never heard of this method before. She proceeded to tell me about the book Pain Free and how she had followed the exercises for her carpal tunnel symptoms and she cured herself. I was instantly intrigued.
I went out and bought the book and proceeded to try out some of the stretches. They looked easy but they were hard for me to do. After doing this only for a couple of days I didn’t pick up the book again until I injured my wrist while kiteboarding. The strain in my wrist was so bad that I could not even hold a glass of water. I remembered the book, so I went to the chapter for wrist pain and started doing the menu. I got better each day I did the menu, and after the third day I could hold a glass of water again. I was hooked!
With the Rolf method of Structural Integration, I work through manipulation of the connective tissue, which changes posture in order to change function. My clients would often ask me, “Is there a way to get the changes that I experience from Rolfing® on my own?” I was wondering this myself until I found the book Pain Free.
So I started recommending the book to all of my clients. The changes that I was seeing were amazing for the people that were doing the menus. I then had a client travel to California to visit his daughter and went to an Egoscue Clinic. He came back raving about how much it changed him and how different or more powerful it was compared to the book to have a custom menu built for him. I was so intrigued by this that I called the clinic that he went to and invited the owner, Chris Kussoff, over to Kauai to do a travel clinic out of my office. Chris ended up giving me a menu as well and the changes that I got from this menu were astounding. This is when I decided to get trained in the Egoscue Method.
That was nearly 5 years ago and I have been doing menus almost every day. Having recently finished my PAS I & II certification, I feel that my training in the Egoscue method has taken my practice to a new level of understanding. It was the missing piece that I wanted for my own health and healing and also for my professional practice. I have moved to California and started my new practice, Motion Unlimited, but I can still help my clients back in Hawaii via email and photos. It has made my practice accessible no matter where I am.
My own self-discovery has been amazing for me, but seeing my clients realize the potential of life without pain limitations- that is truly a remarkable and satisfying thing to witness! My knowledge of Structural Integration and being an Egoscue Method affiliate allows me to combine my skills to teach as many people as I can that they have the ability to heal and stay well through properly aligned movement.
